February Events

It has been a busy couple of weeks here at Mandalay! Last week saw the first quiz night and Busselton Shire Brass Band visit of the season and also the annual Rake Cup cricket.

The quiz night on Tuesday the 8th of February had a fantastic turnout, with teams filling the games room and scattered across the lawn outside.  Our resident spermologist John had a new batch of trivia ready to test even the cleverest of the clever.  Many laughs were had, with the highlight of the night being the video category, where punters had to watch a hilarious film of “funny talking animals” and then answer questions on the images they saw.  The crowd were too busy laughing to pay any real attention to the video, which made for a particularly low scoring round for most teams.  One question that had people stumped was regarding the weight of a brick…  If a brick weighs 1kg plus half a brick, how much does the brick weigh?  Have a think, and the answer will be at the bottom of the blog.

Thursday nights see the return of the Busselton Shire Brass Band, playing both classics and also new tunes.  Thankfully we have had beautiful balmy nights for the band, with everyone enjoying singing along and being entertained by the extremely talented band.

On Friday night guests were all ready for the annual Rake Cup, which is our Australia vs. England (also known as the Internationals) cricket match.  The sledging started early with England opening the batting.  They got off to a good start, setting a total of 86 runs for Australia to chase.  Australia tried their hardest to reach England’s total but unfortunately fell short, only making 82 runs.    The Best Partnership trophy was awarded to Jim Graham and Barry Capes, and Catch of the Day was made by Robert McSorley (with special mention going to Bob Keenan for his speccy one hander).  Man of the Match went to Robert Kristan, a great effort considering he had neither seen nor played cricket in his homeland of Switzerland.  The match finished with the inaugural Mandalay Gift, with baffled guests wondering how six “old, injured blokes” would run even 20 metres!  To their surprise the “runners” were actually riding Segways, which meant rapturous laughter coming from the crowd.  The overall winner of this race was Roger Wilson.

The scene was set on Monday for a romantic night, with guests donning their best outfits and dancing shoes for the Mandalay Valentine’s Day Old Time Dance. A crowd of about 120 enjoyed the dulcet tones of the Busselton Old Time Dance Band and danced the night away with the modern and traditional Waltz, Pride of Erin, Tango, Rumba and Maxina all featuring.

The activities continue tonight with our annual Bocce tournament.  With 25 teams already registered it looks to be a great competition.

Our activities continue throughout February so if you are thinking about a getaway to Mandalay please call our reception to enquire about what’s on and our three night summer accommodation special currently on offer.
